Sambo
A form of 'jacket-wrestling', Sambo is the Russian-origin martial art which utilises a mix of throwing, groundwork and submissions. It was intended to draw from the best techniques of Judo and Wrestling, and is practiced wearing a kurtka (Gi jacket), shorts and wrestling boots. The competitive combat sport is governed by the international FIAS organisation, and is broken into two disciplines:
Sport Sambo
Sport Sambo is a grappling-only discipline, which allows for throwing, pinning, and armlock + straight leglock submissions (but no chokeholds).
Combat Sambo
Combat Sambo is closer towards a mixed martial arts ruleset, as it allows everything from Sport Sambo as well as striking (including punching, knees, kicks and headbutts). Practitioners wear MMA gloves, headgear and shingear in addition to the Sport Sambo uniform.
Famous Sambo practitioners in MMA include champions Khabib Nurmagomedov and Fedor Emelianenko.
